Cancer Research UK said the numbers being
referred by doctors for urgent hospital appointments or checks had
dropped by 75 per cent since the start of the coronavirus outbreak.
Sarah
Woolnough, from the charity, said about 2,300 cancers were being missed
every week as a result, and many patients' operable cancers would
become inoperable if they remained undetected.
Separate
figures estimate that another 400 cancers a week are being missed
because screening for breast, cervical and bowel cancer has been
suspended."
